Scenario:
You recently upgraded a vSphere environment to vSphere 5.5 and want to take advantage of the new tag-based storage policies feature. You want to configure policies based on the speed of the drives.
Requirements:
- Configure a new category for storage tags named Storage Capabilities.
- Configure two tags in this category named 15K and 10K.
- Assign the 15K tag to the first datastore.
- Assign the 10K tag to the second datastore.
Environment Information:
- First datastore: VMFS-10
- Second datastore: VMFS-11

Solution
- Use the vSphere Web Client to access the vCenter Server.
- Select the VM Storage Policies icon in the Home page.
- Select the button to Enable VM storage policies.
- Select the desired hosts or clusters and click the Enable button.
- Verify that the VM Storage Policy Status now indicates Enabled for the selected hosts and clusters.
- Navigate to Home > Storage.
- Select the VMFS-10 datastore in the inventory and select Manage > Tags.
- Click the New Tab icon.
- For Category, select New Category in the drop-down menu.
- For the Name enter 15K.
- Provide a Category Name, such as Storage Capabilities.
- Click OK.
- Select the VMFS-11 datastore in the inventory and select Manage > Tags.
- Click the New Tab icon.
- For Category, select Storage Capabilities in the drop-down menu.
- For the Name enter 10K.
- Click OK.
