Scenario:

You are the administrator of a large vSphere environment. You want to deploy the vSphere Management Assistant (vMA). You also want to ensure that you follow best practices, especially those related to security and user access. You want to allow administrators to use the vMA using their Active Directory (AD) user accounts.

Requirements:

Use the vi-admin account to connect to the vMA.
Configure the vMA to join an AD domain.

Environment Information:

Name of the vMA: vma-01.lab.local
AD domain: vma-01.lab.local
AD administrator user account: administrator

Solution

To accomplish this task, the administrator can perform the following steps:

Use Putty to make an SSH connection to vma-01.lab.local.
Log on using the vi-admin account.
Enter this command to join the AD domain:

sudo domainjoin-cli join lab.local administrator

When prompted, enter the password for the administrator account.

Restart the vMA.
