Scenario:

You are the administrator of a vSphere environment that needs to allow for changes with as little downtime as possible. You need to ensure that CPU and memory resources can be added to your VMs while they are running, without interruption to the user. You guest operating systems support such changes, but you realize that your VMs are not properly configured to support them.

Requirements:

Modify a VM to enable it to permit the addition of CPU and memory while the VM is running:

If necessary, the VM can be shut down and restarted while making changes.
Do not actually increase the CPU or memory of the VM at this time.

After any necessary changes are made, start the VM.

Test the ability to add CPUs and increase the memory of the VM by increasing its number of CPUs to two and its memory to 2 GB while it is running.

Solution

To accomplish this task, the administrator can perform the following steps:

Ensure the VM is powered down.
Right-click the VM and select Edit Settings.
Select the Options tab.
Click Memory/CPU Hotplug.
Check the Enable memory hot add for this virtual machine option. Then check either Enable CPU hot add only for this virtual machine or Enable CPU hot add and remove for this virtual machine.
Click OK.
Power on the VM.
While it is running, right-click the VM and select Edit Settings.
On the hardware tab, increase the CPUs to 2 and the memory to 2 GB.
