Solution

To accomplish this task, the administrator can perform the following steps:

• Use the vSphere Client to add a vmkernel port to each host in the cluster. Configure each new vmkernel port by checking the Fault Tolerance Logging – Enable box.
• Verify the VM meets the FT requirements, such as:
• Verify it meets all vMotion requirements.
• Ensure its virtual disks are eager zero thick provisioned. Alternatively, ensure that sufficient disk space is available to allow FT to automatically inflate the virtual disks.
• Right-click the VM, and select Fault Tolerance > Turn on Fault Tolerance.
• Monitor the progress of the associated tasks.
• On the VM’s summary tab, verify that it is protected, and determine the location of the secondary VM.
• To test failover, right-click the VM and select Fault Tolerance > Test Failover.
• Verify that no user interruption occurs during the test, and confirm that the primary VM is now running on a different host.
