Your network administrators have the ability to use Wireshark on a Windows laptop to inspect network traffic as it travels across physical network switches. They are interested in extending this ability to examine traffic in virtual switches using a Windows-based VM running Wireshark. You want to perform a proof of concept test by simply using a VM-based Wireshark instance to inspect network packets traveling to and from a specific web server VM.

Use the vSphere Client to determine the port numbers where each VM is attached:

Navigate to Inventory > Networking.
In the inventory, click dvSwitch0.
Click the Ports tab. In the list of ports, locate each of the VMs and make note of the port numbers. In this example, assume web-01 is connected to port 10 and wshark-01 is connected to port 110.
In the vSphere Client, select Inventory > Networking.
Right-click dvSwitch0 and select Edit Settings.
Select the Port Mirroring tab, and click Add.
Provide a name for the port mirroring session. For example, use Wireshark.
Select Allow normal I/O on destination ports.
Click Next.
Select Ingress / Egress.
Enter the port ID of the source port, 10. Click Next.
Click the >> link and enter the port ID of the Wireshark VM, 110.
Click Next, and then click Finish.
