Scenario:

You are managing a large vSphere environment, where performance and scalability are emphasized. You are responsible for managing a three-tier application that uses a database server VM, an application server VM, and a web server VM. Due to high network traffic between the application server and the other two VMs, you want to ensure that the three VMs run on the same ESXi hosts, allowing this traffic to stay inside the host. Currently, the VMs run in a fully automated DRS cluster.

Requirements:

Configure the DRS cluster such that the three VMs can run on any ESXi host in the cluster, but all three must run on the same ESXi host.

Environment Information:

VMs running the application: vm-10, vm-11, and vm-12
DRS Cluster: Cluster-01

Solution

Use the vSphere Client to navigate to Inventory > Host and Clusters:

Right-click the cluster and select Edit Settings.

Select VMware DRS > Rules.
Supply a name for the rule, such as Application-1.
Select Keep VMs Together.

In the VMs section, select the VMs named vm-10, vm-11, and vm-12.
