Your vSphere environment resides in a network where you must comply with strict, company-imposed network security policies. One policy requires the network to prevent any servers in the local area network (LAN) from connecting to any external servers, including via firewalls. You need to implement Update Manager Download Service (UMDS) in a VM residing in the DMZ and use it to download updates to a shared folder in the network. Configure the VUM server in the network to use the shared folder to obtain updates.

Prepare a compatible database on the vm-umds server. Prepare an ODBC System DSN connection to the database, and test the connection.
Use the VMware-UMDS.exe file located on the VUM installation DVD to install UMDS in the DMZ-based VM. Be sure to select the ODBC connection in the installation wizard.
Use these commands to download the updates and export the updates to the specified location:

vmware-umd -D
vmware-umd -E --export-store e:\UMDS\repository

In the vSphere Client, select Home > Solutions > Update Manager.
Select Configuration tab > Download Settings.
Select Use a shared repository, and set the folder path to z:\UMDS\repository.
Click Validate URL and click Apply.
Click Download Now to test the configuration.
